Charles M. Turkelson, PhD

Charles M. Turkelson, PhD is a Senior Director of Research, overseeing the development of CMPT’s Effective Guidance Documents. Prior to arriving at CMPT, he was the Director of the Department of Research and Scientific Affairs at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). Here, he developed the AAOS guideline development processes and served as the methodologist on all AAOS guidelines, was involved with collecting and analyzing healthcare statistics, and works on AAOS surveys and its census. Dr. Turkelson earned his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA in 1971, and a Master’s degree in Psychology from the New School University in New York in 1973. He is a 1978 Ph.D. graduate of Tulane University in New Orleans, LA, and was a post doctoral fellow at Tulane Medical School from 1978 to 1983.

For 13 years before coming to AAOS, Dr. Turkelson worked in evidence-based medicine heading a group that performed systematic reviews and technology assessments, worked with specialty societies to prepare clinical practice guidelines, was the director of one of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Evidence-based Practice Centers. He has written and directed the work of ten successfully funded grant proposals and contracts, worked with the Institute of Medicine, and has prepared technology assessments for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Medical Coverage Advisory Committee (MCAC).

Dr. Turkelson has directed over 200 systematic reviews and evidence reports and is the author or co-author of over 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and three book chapters. His research, publications, and presentations have been in meta-analysis, rating the strength of medical evidence, and in peptide physiology and biochemistry. His research has earned grant and contract funding in excess of $5 million.
