CMTP to Help Establish Center for Comparative Effectiveness Research in Cancer Genomics (CANCERGEN)
The Center for Medical Technology Policy, based in Baltimore, Maryland, has been funded to work in collaboration with the newly formed Center for Comparative Effectiveness Research in Cancer Genomics (CANCERGEN) under the leadership of Dr. Scott Ramsey at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. Other major collaborators are the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) and the University of Washington. Funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Grand Opportunities, CANCERGEN's mission is to generate high quality evidence regarding the clinical utility and economic value of Genomics and Personalized Medicine (GPM) applications compared to standard care.
CANCERGEN will develop methods and processes to enable
comparative effectiveness studies of existing and emerging tests along the
genomics pathway. Traditional priority setting in both cancer
clinical trials and Genomics and Personalized Medicine has relied
disproportionately on the views of expert panels and researchers. CANCERGEN
takes a new, more balanced approach - one that better meets the needs of
those who manage, are served by, and have a stake in the technologies that
are moving from discovery to practice. CMTP will help establish and
support and External Stakeholders Advisory Group (ESAG), which will bring
together representatives from health insurers, clinicians with expertise
in primary care, oncology and genomics, GPM test developers, researchers
in GPM, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and patient advocacy
groups and consumer representatives to provide that balanced and
broad approach.
Advisory Group members will meet quarterly, alternating
between teleconferences and in-person meetings. During these
meetings, the Advisory Group will be presented with reports on GPM
technologies based on analysis work from Dave Veenstra's team at the University
of Washington. Based on these presentations, the group will be
responsible for engaging in a consensus building process to identify high
priority areas in need of evidence from prospective trials.
CANCERGEN, in close collaboration with the Southwest Oncology Group,
will use the Advisory Group's recommendations to promote trials for GPM applications
in need to high quality evidence.
