Richard Mathis, PhD

Rick Mathis, PhD is a Senior Research Director at CMTP.  He is currently working with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center on CANCERGEN, a project funded by the National Cancer Institute relating to Genomics and Personalized Medicine in Cancer, in addition to several other projects.  Before joining CMTP, Dr. Mathis was Manager for Medical Policy Research and Development at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee (BCBST). In this capacity, Dr. Mathis lead a team of researchers who draw upon evidence-based medicine to develop and maintain BCBST’s medical policies and to create consumer health information. He also wrote the company’s internal blog on health policy, chairs BCBST’s Workgroup on Improving Cultural Competence, sits on BCBST’s benefits design committee, and worked with the faculty of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Chattanooga. He is the author of several books, including Making More of Life with Less and Finding a Grace-Filled Life, and has published widely in such journals as Health Affairs, Inquiry, The Journal of Medical Ethics, and The American Journal of Managed Care.

Dr. Mathis received his PhD and MA in Political Science from the Johns Hopkins University and his BA from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where he graduated summa cum laude. He is a graduate of Executive Leadership Programs sponsored by America’s Health Insurance Plan and the BlueCross BlueShield Association and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
